Sans Serif

A category of typefaces whose letterforms lack the projecting terminal strokes (serifs) found in serif designs. The name derives from the French sans, meaning "without." First appearing in print in the early nineteenth century, sans serif typefaces gained prominence through the modernist movements of the twentieth century and are now the dominant category in screen-based design. They are subdivided into four principal groups:
Grotesque Sans Serif
,
Neo-Grotesque Sans Serif
,
Humanist Sans Serif
, and
Geometric Sans Serif
