Baseline

The invisible horizontal line upon which the main body of most Latin-script letters rests. The baseline is the fundamental reference line in a

X-Height

Ascender
line, and
Descender
line are all measured relative to it. Rounded or pointed letterforms (such as o and v) typically extend fractionally below the baseline — an optical compensation called overshoot — to appear visually aligned with flat-bottomed characters.
